Rummy Rules and Card Combinations

Rummy Rules and Card Combinations: A Beginner’s Overview

There is no single rulebook that applies to every rummy variation. Before playing or practising, identify the version and confirm its deck, hand size, turn order, joker rules, valid combinations, scoring and declaration requirements.

Common Combination Types

Sequence

A sequence is generally made from consecutive ranks in the same suit. Example: 7♦, 8♦, 9♦. The minimum number of cards and Ace rules vary.

Pure Sequence

In variations using this term, a pure sequence is formed without substituting a joker for a missing card. Confirm the exact definition in the game’s rulebook.

Impure Sequence

In some variations, a joker may substitute for a missing card in a sequence. The allowed use of jokers differs by game.

Set

A set commonly groups cards of the same rank across different suits, for example 5♠, 5♥ and 5♣. Specific restrictions vary.

Draw and Discard

Many rummy games ask a player to draw a card and discard one during a turn. The available draw sources and rules for taking from a discard pile depend on the variation.

Scoring and Ending a Round

Scoring systems are not universal. Card values, penalties, valid declarations and round-ending conditions must be read from the exact rules. Do not rely on a general article as a substitute for a game’s official instructions.
